Canoe Sprint

Train Hard, Play Hard

Canoe Sprint is a competitive sport in which athletes race on a kayak or a canoe on calm water. It requires both strength and endurance. The distances athletes compete in are mainly 500m and 1000m. Athletes can choose to compete in K1, K2, K4, C1, or C2 races for both distances.

In a kayak, the paddler is seated and uses a double-bladed paddle. In a canoe, the paddler kneels on one knee with the other leg forward and foot flat on the floor of the boat and paddles a single-bladed paddle on one side only.

Our motto is “Train hard and play hard”. We believe that to succeed, we must train hard together as a team that pushes and motivates each other to our best capabilities.

Our training regimen includes land training on Mondays at the SP Stadium Gym, water training on Wednesday and Saturday at MacRitchie Reservoir. Months of hard work paid off and it is evident from the recent POL-ITE 2018. Our men's team emerged as champions for two consecutive years and the women’s team achieved the first runners-up. The results are a testament to our strong mental and physical strength for enduring throughout the whole strenuous training season.

We also ventured out of our comfort zones to seek more exposure and experience. Our team took part in races such as the Singapore Canoe Marathon (SCM) and Inter-Tertiary Canoe Championship (ITCC). In January 2019, one of our canoeists emerged as second runners-up in the SCM 12km race, competing against tough competitors.

To strengthen our bonds as a team, we planned team bonding activities to get to know each other better as well. In April 2018, we went for an exchange programme to Gold Coast, Australia, to learn from elite Australian national paddlers and coaches. During that trip, we did not only learn how to improve our technique but also a lot about one another.

Our goal for the upcoming year is to stay humble and continue to have the hunger to improve and strive for more achievements. We would also like to inspire the SP community to adopt the values of accountability, ownership and commitment in their lives.
